The Council of Canadians submitted its views to the Canada Water Agency as it was being formed and highlighted the need for Canada to implement its commitment to the United Nations 2010 resolution on the human right to clean water and sanitation.
The Council reminded the Agency that there are still First Nations communities without safe drinking water and also dangerously high levels of lead in some municipal drinking water pipes due to antiquated infrastructure. The submission also called on the government to strengthen freshwater protection and protect water from major extractive industry operations.
