In March 2023, the United Nations held its first conference on water in almost 50 years. Thousands of delegates and organizations from around the world attended. While there was criticism that the outcome document was not binding, the conference did result in a number of serious undertakings, including the largest river and wetland restoration initiative in history. Its aim is the restoration of 300,000 km of rivers and 350 hectares of wetlands by 2030.
